Overview
Neuro-Oncology Case Conference

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. t is anticipated that patient care will be improved because of the implementation at East Carolina University / Vidant Health of ongoing efforts, communicated and discussed at the Neurooncology Tumor Board sessions, which incorporate significant changes introduced in the World Health Organization 2016 Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System. The new WHO guidelines incorporate molecular characterization of neoplasms and eliminated specific previous categories of neoplasms (oligoastrocytoma WHO grades II, III, and IV; gliomatosis cerebri). Findings are communicated using a new set of nomenclature within diagnostic reports. Most importantly, this new classification, with a molecular distinction between astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas with specific molecular attributes has had significant implications for therapy. These changes and improvements are discussed at the Neurooncology Tumor Board sessions and incorporated into discussion of every case. The aggregate effects include improvement in the specific diagnosis of patient’s neoplasms, advanced discussions incorporating molecular data among Neurooncology Team members, and then improved patient care with the goal of improved patient outcomes.
  2. It is anticipated that this activity will change and improve practice patterns, increase medical knowledge, lead to utilization of evidence-based practice as it relates to Neurooncology patients, reinforce practice-based improvements by discussing new research and findings in peer-reviewed literature
